What is Electrical Discharge Machining?

Electrical discharge machining(EDM) is a metalworking process in which a desired shape is obtained by applying a series of rapid cycles of electrial discharge(sparks) to a workpiece. Between the two electrodes,seperated by a medium liquid, and subject to voltage. One of the electrodes is called the tool electrode and the other is called the workpiece electrode, or workpiece. When the voltage between the electrodes becomes stronger, causing a dielectric breakdown of the liquid, creating an arc, and therefore, the material on the electrodes is removed. Once the current is stoppped(depending on the type of generator), liquid medium is redelivered btween the electrodes, so that the solid particles or debris are restoered. Adding new medium liquid is often referred to as flushing. After the current flows, the voltage between the electrodes returns to the level before the breakdown, so that the new liquid medium breakdown can repeat the cycle to removing the material on the workpiece.

Why choose electrical discharge machining?

Metal materials with high hardness(tungsten and other materials) and high accuracy have to be processed by EDM. Compared with ordinary milling or turning processing, its advantages are obvious in terms of high precision and a beautiful completion on the surface. The following polishing process is no longer needed after EDM.

What materials are suitable for EMD?

Conductive metal and graphite can be used for EDM, notably tungsten, brass, bronze, carbon, graphite copper, carbon steel, stainless steel, inconel alloy and so on.
